Wedding Veil Guide: Types, Fabrics & Tips
Bride’s Comprehensive Guide to Style Veil with Wedding Dress: How to choose the right design, fabric, pattern?
A veil is an item of wedding clothing accessory that partly covers a women’s head or face. According to wedding historian Susan Waggoner, it is the oldest part of the bride’s ensemble. In older days, it was customary for a bride to be covered completely and wear a veil- it was a symbol of her purity and modesty. Many also believed that the veil hid the bride from evil spirits who would otherwise steal her happiness.

3 Types of Veil Tiers
Veils also come in three different tier styles.
- Single tier– It’s a veil with a single layer that may be spread out or gathered on a comb, and ideal for brides looking for a minimalist veil.
- Two-tier– It consists of two layers sewn together. Usually, it consists of a front blusher to cover your face and a veil that falls sideways or backward.
- Three-tier– It consists of three layers, one blusher and two veil layers sewn strategically to create a beautiful effect.
13 Types of Veil Edge (Finishing)
There are multiple styles when it comes to veil edge. There is no right or wrong variant, you can pick any design you fancy.
1. Raw Hand Cut Edge
The edges are plain and devoid of any design. This style is quite popular as the veil blends in with any gown and suffuses a hint of delicateness to a bride’s look.
2. Pencil Edge
A finely sewn edge makes for a thin outline for the wedding veil. Usually, the edge color matches the color of the veil.
3. Scalloped Edge
It is similar to a finely stitched pencil edge, except for the fact that it is in the shape of 6 to 8 inches scallop. It goes well with a dress that has a scallop laced skirt, and you can also choose between shallow or deep scallops.
4. Wired Edge
It is similar to the pencil edge, except that the thread is replaced by a soft wire that creates a beautiful wave-like effect on the edge. It looks great on a long veil.
5. Rippled Edge
In ripple edging, the thread is bound on a clear line to create waves or ripples on the edge of the veil. The thread may or may not match the color of the veil.
6. Satin Ribbon Edge
In this design, a satin ribbon is sewn to the edge of a veil, and no veil material extends past it. Wider ribbons can give the veil a bold look.
7. Satin Cord Edge
Satin cord edging or rattail edging is a beautiful finish done using a satin cord. While satin ribbon is wider, a satin cord is round and tubular and is usually 1/8’’ wide.
8. Satin & Organza Edge
This edging is a beautiful blend of two fabrics, satin and organza, and it looks dreamy on a center gathered veil. It consists of two thin satin lines with an organza section in between.
9. Wide Organza Ribbon Edge
A wide organza ribbon is sewn to the veil edge, and since organza is a sheer fabric, the wide ribbon gives a subtle effect to the veil.
10. Pearl Edge
A continuous line of strung pearls is attached to the veil edge which adds a hint of luxury to it.
11. Rhinestone Edge
A trim with individual rhinestones is attached to the edge, which also adds a bit of weight to the veil. Unlike the pearl edge, the sparkle of the rhinestones is evident only on one side of the veil.
12. Lace Edge
Beautifully crafted laces like Chantilly lace or Alencon lace are also used in veil edging.
13. Beaded Edge
Beaded edges or seed bead bands are also used to give finishing to bridal veils. They go well with all styles of veils.
14. Crystal Band
Crystal band edging is made of special crystals, like Czech Fire Polished Crystals, that come in many colors. These are mostly made on order.
15. Horsehair Edge
Horsehair or crinoline is lustrous netting that may be used for edging in veils. Different width of fabric may be used, depending on the intended look.
8 Types of Fabrics used in Veils
- Bridal Illusion/ Tulle- Tulle is a very fine net fabric with tiny holes, and bridal illusion is the finest quality of tulle. It is the most transparent fabric that you can get for long veils, and it is ideal for a beach or outdoor wedding.
- Glimmer Illusion- It is similar to bridal illusion, but it is rather shiny and stiffer while bridal illusion is matte and soft. It is also great for outdoor weddings.
- Silk chiffon- A thin fabric that doesn’t have holes or nettings, it is a woven, opaque fabric. You can only see a shadow of what is underneath, and it’s suitable for shorter veils.
- Polyester chiffon- A chiffon fabric made of polyester. It is less matte than silk chiffon and has a smoother texture, which makes it suitable for longer veils.
- Organza- It is a stiff, woven fabric that is used to make light and transparent veils. Organza veils are suitable for wearing at all weather.
- English Nette- A net fabric that is thicker than a bridal illusion. Also, it is more matte and less transparent. It has a drape and flow that resembles silk tulle, and it makes for a suitable veil for an outdoor wedding.
- Silk Tulle- A very expensive and fragile silk netting fabric. It has a soft, gauze-like structure, and it suits small to medium lengths veil.
- French Net- A stiff netting fabric with large holes. French net is only used for making birdcage veils, and white, ivory, and black are the only colors it comes in.
3 Types of Veil Widths
54’’ Width: A veil of this width falls below your shoulders and lets your gown or decorative straps take the center stage.
72’’ Width: A veil of this width offers more height and coverage around your arms, so it goes well with a gown that has spaghetti straps.
108’’ Width: A veil of this width gives a lot of fullness on the top, hence wear it with strapless gowns with minimalist design. Avoid it if your gown is formal or elaborately detailed.
